Da Vinci Surgery
Robot-assisted surgery in which a trained surgeon controls instruments through the da Vinci Surgical System.
Overview
It can be used for selected urological, gynecological, colorectal, abdominal, chest and other operations. Availability and suitability depend on the operation, hospital and surgical team.
The da Vinci system combines a surgeon’s console, a patient-side instrument cart and a vision system. The surgeon controls the instruments while viewing a magnified three-dimensional image.
What to expect
Preparation follows the requirements of the specific operation. Discuss fasting, medicines, tests, alternatives and costs with the surgical team.
Under general anesthesia, the surgeon operates instruments through small incisions while controlling their movements from the console. The system assists the surgeon rather than operating independently.
Hospital stay, activity restrictions and recovery vary with the operation. Attend follow-up visits and report fever, worsening wound redness, drainage or excessive bleeding.
Risks
Risks include bleeding, infection and anesthesia-related complications. Robot-assisted surgery may take longer and cost more than some alternatives. Discuss the expected benefits and limitations for your procedure.
