Overview

It may treat selected pancreatic cancers and some bile duct, ampullary or small-bowel tumors, pancreatic cysts, inflammation or injuries. Suitability depends on the disease and surgical assessment.

A Whipple procedure, or pancreaticoduodenectomy, removes the pancreatic head, duodenum, gallbladder and part of the bile duct; part of the stomach may also be removed. The remaining organs are reconnected.

What to expect

Before

After

Hospital care includes pain control, monitoring, gradual return to food and assisted movement. Recovery continues at home. Digestive enzyme supplements and other medicines may be prescribed.

Risks

Risks include bleeding, infection, leaks, delayed digestive function, nutritional or weight changes and temporary or permanent diabetes. Close follow-up is important after this complex operation.
