Acupuncture
Acupuncture uses fine needles at selected points on the body and may be used to help manage pain and certain other symptoms.
Overview
It may be considered for back or neck pain, osteoarthritis, headaches, menstrual cramps and some nausea-related symptoms. Suitability depends on the condition and medical assessment.
Acupuncture is a treatment in which a trained practitioner inserts very fine needles at selected body points. It is commonly used as part of a plan for managing pain.
What to expect
Discuss your symptoms, medicines and expectations with a qualified practitioner. Tell them about pregnancy, blood-thinning medicines, bleeding disorders or an implanted pacemaker.
You rest on a treatment table while fine needles are placed at selected points. The practitioner may gently manipulate the needles or apply heat or electrical stimulation. Needles are removed at the end of the session.
Some people feel relaxed or energised afterward. Response varies; review progress with your practitioner if symptoms do not improve.
Risks
Temporary soreness, bruising or minor bleeding can occur. Sterile, single-use needles reduce infection risk. Extra precautions may be needed during pregnancy or with bleeding disorders or pacemakers.
