Balloon Mitral Valvotomy
A catheter-based procedure that widens a narrowed mitral heart valve to improve blood flow.
Overview
A heart specialist may consider it for symptoms such as breathlessness or increased pressure in the lung circulation. Valve anatomy and overall health determine suitability.
Balloon mitral valvotomy treats selected cases of mitral stenosis, where narrowing of the valve restricts blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle.
What to expect
Follow the heart team’s fasting and medicine instructions. Discuss anticoagulants and tell the team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant. Change medicines only as directed.
A catheter carrying a deflated balloon is guided through a blood vessel to the valve using imaging. Inflation of the balloon widens the opening; the catheter is then removed.
You are monitored in recovery and may need to keep the access-site limb still. Discharge is often the following day. Follow individual activity and follow-up instructions.
Risks
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, radiation exposure and recurrent valve narrowing. Your specialist will explain the risks relevant to your heart and general health.
