Gamma Knife Radiosurgery
Precisely focused radiation treatment for selected brain tumors and other neurological conditions, without a surgical incision.
Overview
It may be used for selected tumors, vascular abnormalities or other conditions when the team considers focused radiation suitable, including some targets that are difficult to reach surgically.
Gamma Knife radiosurgery directs concentrated radiation at a carefully planned target. Despite the name, it does not involve cutting into the brain.
What to expect
Discuss implants, medical conditions and your ability to lie flat with the treatment team. Follow the specific fasting and medicine instructions. Imaging is used to plan treatment.
A frame or other positioning system keeps the head accurately aligned. You lie on the treatment bed while radiation is delivered. Staff monitor you and can communicate with you throughout.
You receive instructions for any pin sites and symptoms such as headache or nausea. Arrange transport if sedated. Follow-up imaging checks the response, which may develop over time.
Risks
Possible effects include fatigue, headache, nausea, scalp discomfort, temporary hair loss and brain swelling. Your team will explain delayed effects and when to seek advice.
