Overview

It is generally considered for selected men with mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence, particularly after prostate surgery. Assessment helps determine whether a sling or another treatment is appropriate.

A male sling uses a strip of synthetic mesh-like material to support and reposition the urethra, helping improve urinary control.

What to expect

Before

Tests may include urine analysis, blood tests, cystoscopy, urodynamics or a pad test. Follow the surgical team’s fasting instructions and change medicines only on their advice.

During

Through an incision in the perineum, between the scrotum and anus, the surgeon positions the sling around the urethral bulb to improve support and resistance to leakage.

After

The operation is often outpatient, although an overnight stay may be needed. A temporary catheter may drain the bladder while swelling settles. Follow wound-care and activity instructions.

Risks

Risks include persistent or recurrent leakage, difficulty passing urine, bleeding, infection and erosion of the implanted material. Urinary retention may need catheter treatment or further surgery.
