Overview

It may be considered for occipital neuralgia, migraine, cluster headache, cervicogenic headache or selected neck-related pain when other treatments are insufficient. It may also help identify a pain source.

An occipital nerve block delivers local anesthetic, sometimes with a steroid, near nerves at the back of the head. The degree and duration of relief vary.

What to expect

Before

Discuss your medical history and medicines. Preparation is usually limited, but fasting and transport arrangements may be required if sedation is planned.

During

The clinician identifies the target nerve, sometimes using imaging, cleans the skin and injects the medicine nearby. You are monitored for an immediate response.

After

A short observation period follows. Follow the clinician’s activity advice and arrange a ride if sedated. Some people need repeat treatment or a wider headache-management plan.

Risks

Possible effects include soreness, redness, bleeding, dizziness, numbness or fainting. Less common risks include infection, nerve or artery injury, swallowing difficulty or worsening headache.
