Overview

It may be offered for bothersome vaginal or pelvic organ prolapse causing bulging, pressure or related urinary or bowel symptoms.

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when supporting muscles and tissues weaken, allowing organs to descend toward the vagina. Sacrocolpopexy restores support, often through laparoscopic or robot-assisted abdominal surgery.

What to expect

Before

Discuss treatment alternatives, mesh-related issues and any additional planned repairs. Follow the team’s fasting, smoking and medicine instructions.

During

Under general anesthesia, the surgeon secures mesh between the vaginal walls and a ligament over the sacrum. Additional repairs may be performed when appropriate.

After

Follow incision-care instructions and avoid heavy lifting and sexual intercourse until cleared. Recovery often takes six to eight weeks, with scheduled follow-up to assess healing.

Risks

Risks include bleeding, infection, clots, injury to nearby organs, urinary or bowel problems, persistent pain, recurrent prolapse and mesh exposure or erosion. Further surgery may be required.
