Overview

A clinician may use them to treat selected stable SVT episodes or help identify the type of rhythm. Unstable symptoms require a different urgent treatment approach.

Vagal maneuvers affect electrical conduction through the heart and may slow or stop some episodes of supraventricular tachycardia. They are not suitable for every fast heartbeat.

What to expect

Before

The team checks an ECG, heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels and assesses whether a maneuver is appropriate.

During

A trained clinician selects and guides a suitable technique while monitoring the rhythm. Some techniques, including carotid sinus massage, require professional assessment and should not be attempted independently.

After

The rhythm is reassessed with an ECG. If the maneuver is ineffective, medication, cardioversion or specialist treatment may be needed. Recurrent episodes require follow-up.

Risks

Possible complications include low blood pressure, an excessively slow pulse or another arrhythmia. Certain techniques carry additional risks, including stroke. Only use a home technique if your clinician has specifically taught and approved it.
